Tupper Lake, NY

Tupper Lake is a village in Franklin County inside Adirondack Park, at the north end of Tupper Lake and on the east shore of Raquette Pond. The 2020 census counted 3,282 residents. Settlement began around 1844, and the early community developed in two parts, Tupper Lake proper and Faust. The village was founded in 1903; the larger town was called Altamont until 2004. That town-village overlap still matters because the village provides streets, water, sewer, electric, fire, and police services across a community with two distinct centers: Uptown around Park Street and Downtown, also called the Junction, around Main Street.

Demars Boulevard, carrying New York 3, links those centers along the waterfront. Park Street businesses and institutions give Uptown one focus, while Main Street's Junction provides another. The Wild Center's 115-acre campus brings environmental science and education into the local economy, and the Adirondack Sky Center and Observatory adds public astronomy. The 34-mile Adirondack Rail Trail connects Tupper Lake with Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, while the State Theater, Little Wolf Beach, and year-round small businesses keep activity tied to the village itself. Tupper Lake's map is a combination of two older centers, a water-and-highway corridor, and institutions that make the Adirondack setting part of ordinary town life.
