Turtle Lake, WI (Village)

Turtle Lake is a Barron County village at the center of a larger town-and-lake community that also includes Twin Town. The first settlers arrived in 1875, drawn by hardwood and pine forests. Stephen Richardson first called the settlement Skowhagen, built a sawmill in 1879, and kept a general store and post office moving. Surveyors gave the two lakes their Turtle Lake name after seeing turtles laying eggs along the shores, and the railroad’s arrival north of town made the lake name the practical choice.

The village was platted in 1898, and the sawmill, railroad supply shipments, dairy, and lake recreation all left marks on the area. Today the town’s water, woods, and road network connect to village parks, boat access, fishing, and the Turtle Lake School District. A 1960 Wisconsin Historical Society map presented the area as a dairyland gateway to vacation country, a phrase that catches the overlap between working farm country and summer water life. Turtle Lake’s local scoop is a place named for turtles that grew because lumber and railroad freight made the lakes useful.
