Tuttletown, CA

Tuttletown is a Tuolumne County census-designated place on State Route 49 near Columbia, with a California Historical Landmark marker and a Gold Rush-era name. The settlement was first called Mormon Gulch after a group of Latter-day Saint miners began working gold there in 1848. Judge Anson A. H. Tuttle built the first log cabin in 1848, and the stopping place later took his name. The state landmark also remembers Mark Twain trading at the old settlement store, a detail that gives Tuttletown a famous visitor without turning the place into a generic Gold Country stop.
