Umapine, OR

Sitting in the Walla Walla Valley just two miles south of the Washington state line, Umapine is a quiet farming community in northeastern Oregon. With a population of fewer than 300 residents, the surrounding landscape is filled with open fields of wheat and hay, fruit orchards, grazing cattle, and rolling vineyards. The town originated in the early 1900s as a stop along the local railway, eventually taking its name from Cayuse leader Chief Umapine.

Daily life here centers on wide-open spaces and a close-knit country atmosphere. Longtime local fixtures include Tate's Market, The Waterhole tavern, and Umapine Creamery, a working dairy known for its farmstead cheeses. Students attend schools in the neighboring Milton-Freewater district, including Ferndale Elementary and McLoughlin High School. While the community offers peaceful rural seclusion, everyday conveniences and regional services are only a short drive away in Milton-Freewater and Walla Walla.
