Underwood, IN

Underwood is an unincorporated town and census-designated place in Monroe Township, northern Clark County. U.S. 31 runs through the township, and the Monroe Township Volunteer Fire Department keeps its Station 2 on the highway in Underwood. The station serves both communities. The community is part of a rural strip between Henryville, Blue Lick, and the Scott County line, with Interstate 65 and State Road 160 providing larger regional connections.

The Underwood name comes from a local family, but the surrounding story reaches farther back. About half a mile north is the Pigeon Roost settlement, where William Elston Collings brought his family from Kentucky in 1809. A state marker and later log cabin remember the Pigeon Roost community and the 1812 massacre, while descendants still gather for a September picnic. Underwood today is the practical center of that Monroe Township stretch: houses, farm roads, a volunteer fire station, and highway traffic linking a small Clark County place to southern Indiana’s bigger towns.
