Uniontown, AL

Uniontown is a Perry County city in Alabama's Black Belt, settled in 1818 as Woodville and incorporated in 1836. A plank road built in 1848 connected Woodville with Demopolis, and the Alabama and Mississippi Railroad arrived in 1857. The name changed to Uniontown in 1861, but the older town pattern remains visible in the main street, farms, and historic homes. Fairhope Plantation, Pitts' Folly, Westwood, and the Uniontown Historic District are all listed on the National Register. The city still sits in the middle of Perry County's west-central road network.

School and civic life give Uniontown its present center. Perry County School District serves the city, and R.C. Hatch High School carries a remarkable basketball history, with eleven state championships recorded for its teams. U.S. Highway 80 runs east-west through town, linking Uniontown to Demopolis and the wider Black Belt. The city combines a plantation-era landscape, railroad and plank-road history, a courthouse-town role, and a basketball tradition that residents have carried forward across generations.
