Unionville CDP (Butler County), PA

Unionville is a census-designated place in Center Township, Butler County, just northwest of Butler along the old Butler–Unionville road and Pennsylvania Route 8. The village began around 1828, when Samuel Thompson opened a store on the Mercer turnpike; a tavern and other stores followed. The nineteenth-century county history places Unionville among the township’s small market villages, while the route still connects the community south to Butler and north toward Harrisville. That makes the local geography easy to read: Unionville is a crossroads name set inside a broader farm-and-road landscape.

Center Township’s older story is agricultural, with wheat, corn, oats, rye, potatoes, vegetables, fruit, grasses, and bituminous coal all part of the surrounding picture. Unionville also had a post office, mercantile businesses, and, by 1889, a cemetery association serving the village. In the current map, it is less a stand-alone downtown than a named pocket within Center Township, close to Butler’s larger commercial corridor. The local shorthand is the same one it has always had: a small trading place whose importance comes from the roads and farms around it.
