Upper Red Hook, NY

Upper Red Hook is a Dutchess County hamlet and census-designated place in the northeastern part of the Town of Red Hook. U.S. Route 9 passes through, pointing north toward Hudson and south through Red Hook village and Rhinebeck. The community's older story reaches back to the colonial period, when Upper Red Hook was a small settlement with a tavern, farm roads, and connections to the Hudson River landings.

The Red Hook area developed through Dutch and Palatine German settlement, leased farms, mills, dairying, and fruit growing. Upper Red Hook later gave its name to the lower village after the post office moved, while the historic road network continued to organize the town. Today the hamlet sits among farms, roadside stands, specialty agriculture, and Hudson Valley destinations, with Red Hook's schools, shops, and civic services close by. Upper Red Hook is a rural crossroads with an older name, a busy north-south route, and layers of Dutchess County history under the modern map.
