Urbana, MD

Urbana transformed from a quiet Maryland crossroads into one of southern Frederick County's premier master-planned communities. You can still see traces of the original settlement along MD Route 355, but the heart of the area now revolves around newer developments like the Villages of Urbana and Urbana Highlands. These neighborhoods were designed with walkable town centers, local schools, and plenty of shared green space. Rapid growth over the last two decades means much of the local infrastructure, from the school buildings to the shopping plazas, feels modern and well cared for. Because Urbana is unincorporated, Frederick County oversees public services, schools, and zoning.

Getting around the region is relatively simple thanks to convenient highway access. Interstate 270 sits right on Urbana's western edge, intersecting with Route 80 and connecting directly to Route 355 toward Frederick. Commuters heading south toward Montgomery County and Washington, D.C. frequently rely on the large park-and-ride lot near the highway. Maryland MTA commuter buses run regular weekday routes from the lot to the Shady Grove Metro station, College Park, and major corporate hubs along the I-270 technology corridor. Most residents rely on cars for errands, but having direct highway ramps and transit options helps ease the daily commute.

For outdoor fun, residents have access to two large county parks alongside an extensive network of neighborhood trails. The 95-acre Urbana District Park offers lighted ball fields, soccer and lacrosse fields, walking paths, picnic shelters, a dedicated dog park, and an accessible playground. Nearby, the 20-acre Urbana Community Park provides extra sports fields and recreational space near the northern town center. Inside the individual subdivisions, paved pathways connect backyards to community pools, playgrounds, and pocket parks, making it easy to stay active without leaving the neighborhood.
