About Utica

Utica sits on the Ohio River across from the Louisville-area crossings, and its early importance came from getting people over the water. From 1794 to 1825, the town operated a ferry that offered an alternative to the rougher crossing near Jeffersonville and the Falls of the Ohio. The river still sets the scale of the place, although the modern landscape is also shaped by the I-265 bridge, the Port of Indiana–Jeffersonville, and River Ridge Commerce Center nearby. That mix gives Utica an unusual local outline: an old ferry town pressed against major freight and highway infrastructure, with the Ohio still doing the work of defining the edge.
