Utica, OH

Utica is a Licking County village along the North Fork of the Licking River, a small farming community whose early mills set its first rhythm. Major William Robertson purchased the land in 1810, the settlement was established in 1814, and the name changed from Wilmington to Utica when the post office opened in 1821. Robertson's sawmill, gristmill, and wool-carding machine made the river valley a place of work as well as a place to settle.

The village later became known for its hand-blown glass industry, using local silica and natural gas, and that glassmaking past still gives Utica a distinct industrial chapter. North Fork Local Schools connects the village with a wider district, while the Licking County Library branch on South Main Street provides a regular community stop and meeting room. Utica's present-day map is modest: river, village streets, school connections, library, and farms. The older mills and glassworks show why a small Ohio village has a history that reaches beyond its size.
