Vale, OR

Vale is Malheur County’s seat, a small city on the Malheur River where Bully Creek joins, about 12 miles west of Idaho and at the meeting of U.S. 20 and 26. Its location has always made it a stopping place. Paiute people gathered in the area during salmon runs, Oregon Trail travelers used it as the first stop in the territory, and the Rinehart Stone House later served as an inn and stage stop between Boise and the Willamette Valley. The old stone house reopened as a museum in 1995, keeping that travel history tied to a building in town. Vale still works as a service center for eastern Malheur County, with county offices, schools, city services, and highway traffic concentrated in a community of 1,894 residents in the 2020 census.

Wadleigh Park sits between the city pool and rodeo grounds, with baseball fields, a skate park, playgrounds, and covered picnic pavilions; Cottonwood Park adds soccer space and an ultimate-frisbee course. The pool, rodeo grounds, parks, and city library give the town a practical set of gathering places alongside its county-seat work. Vale is a county-seat place where an Oregon Trail stopping point still shares the map with baseball, rodeo, and a city pool.
