Valentine, NE

Valentine is the Cherry County seat in north-central Nebraska, with 2,633 residents in the 2020 census. The city was founded in 1882, and its post office opened that December. It sits immediately north of the Niobrara River at the northern edge of the Sandhills, with ranch roads and wide prairie meeting the river’s cottonwood-lined valley. Fort Niobrara, Merritt Reservoir, Smith Falls, and the Niobrara National Scenic River put a lot of outdoor country around a town that still handles county business, schools, supplies, and medical trips for a very large rural area. Valentine Community Schools, the Cherry County courthouse, local shops, motels, outfitters, and city services make the center useful year-round.

Summer brings canoe and kayak traffic to the river, while ranch work and county government keep the local routine grounded in the seasons. The city’s position makes it a natural stop between the Sandhills and the river country, but the local feel is more county-seat than resort: people come through for the water and trails, while residents are here for school, work, groceries, healthcare, and the business of a spread-out Nebraska county. Valentine is a small city with a very large landscape attached.
