Vallecito, CA

Vallecito is a Calaveras County census-designated place on State Route 4, with a 2020 population of 442. Its story is pure Gold Rush country: John and Daniel Murphy found gold on Coyote Creek in 1849, richer deposits drew miners back in 1852, and the camp became one of the county’s early mining centers. A major fire destroyed much of the town in 1859, but the old pattern did not disappear. The post office dates to 1854, and the Dinkelspiel Store, Community Church, and several early residences still give the center a sense of its nineteenth-century shape. Vallecito is also tied to the underground landscape nearby.

Moaning Cavern, reached from the town area, has California’s largest single cave chamber and a history of use as a burial place by Miwok people. The state recognizes Vallecito as Historical Landmark No. 273, specifically for the early-1850s mining camp and the fire that nearly erased it. Today the place is a small foothill community where old mining buildings, Highway 4, working land, and cave trips overlap.
