Valley City, OH

Valley City is a small unincorporated community in central Liverpool Township, where the West Branch of the Rocky River runs through Medina County. The 2020 census counted 943 residents in the CDP. Early settlement clustered around the river and the Hardscrabble area; one pioneer, a Revolutionary War veteran, planted corn, built a dwelling, and operated a salt works. The village of Liverpool Center was laid out in 1834, giving the place a formal center amid the township’s scattered farms.

Valley City’s best-known tradition is delightfully specific: the annual Frog Jump Festival. The contest began during Liverpool Township’s sesquicentennial preparations in 1962 and now takes place each summer at Mill Stream Park along the Rocky River. The event grew into the “Frog Jump Capital of Ohio” identity, with the jumping contests recognized as Ohio championship contests. The river keeps the geography grounded while the festival gives the calendar its own signature. Valley City connects north toward Lake Erie through the Rocky River and sits west of Brunswick, but the place’s local conversation tends to come back to the riverbank, the old township center, and frogs with ambitions.
