Van Lear, KY

Tucked along Miller’s Creek in Johnson County, Van Lear is a quiet mountain community with deep roots in eastern Kentucky coal history. Founded in the early 1900s as a boomtown along the railroad, the valley developed into a busy industrial hub before transitioning to the peaceful residential area it is today. You can still see that past in the layout of the valley, from the vintage company houses to the scenic creek-side roads winding through the hills.

Local heritage remains a major point of pride for residents. The former mining headquarters now hosts the Coal Miners’ Museum, preserving photos, artifacts, and memories from the town's prime. Just down the road in Butcher Hollow sits the famous childhood home of country music icons Loretta Lynn and Crystal Gayle, drawing visitors from across the country.
