About Van Wyck
Van Wyck is a Lancaster County place with a name that has taken a few turns. The community was first called Cocheecho, then Little Waxhaw and Heaths, before the railroad settled on Van Wyck in the late 1880s. The post office followed in 1889, and U.S. 521 still gives the town its north-south spine between Charlotte and Lancaster. The Catawba River is west of town, with the North Carolina line on the other side. One of the best historical footnotes is that George Washington spent his last night in South Carolina at Major Robert Crawford’s home nearby in 1791. Van Wyck incorporated in 2017, but its story reaches back to a much older Catawba and farm-country crossroads.
