Vanceboro, NC

Vanceboro lies along the east bank of Swift Creek in Craven County, roughly between New Bern and Washington. The town began as Durgantown around 1750, became Swift Creek in the nineteenth century, and took the Vanceboro name after Zebulon B. Vance spoke there during his 1876 campaign for governor. Before highways carried the traffic, three landings on the creek served steamboats running to New Bern, so the town's first regional connections were by water.

Today the Main Street calendar still gives Vanceboro a reason to gather. The annual Strawberry Festival brings a parade, food, music, games, a midway, and a Strawberry King and Queen, while the walking path offers a short loop through downtown and nearby neighborhoods. West Craven Middle and High Schools tie the town to the wider school district, and town services cover water, sewer, streets, parks, and stormwater. Vanceboro has the feel of a creek town that kept its crossroads role: a little agricultural, a little commuter, and very aware of its spring weekend.
