Vandling, PA

Vandling is a small Lackawanna County borough just south of Forest City on Route 171, with Carbondale and Susquehanna County close by. It was incorporated in 1899 from Fell Township and first went by Clintonville, a name tied to the Clinton Coal Colliery. Abraham Vandling, a mine boss who donated money for a church, gave the borough its present name. The order of that history tells you a lot about the place: lumbering came first, then easy-to-reach coal turned the settlement into part of the Northeastern Pennsylvania mining belt.

Vandling is only about 1.3 square miles, so its everyday map is compact. Forest City Regional is the local school district, while fire, ambulance, and police services are shared with neighboring communities. Forest City sits immediately north, and the borough's streets blend into the larger patchwork of old mine villages and wooded roads around it. Vandling is not a big standalone center; it is a compact borough with a mining name, a church connection, and the practical habit of sharing services across town lines.
