Vashon Highway runs straight down the middle of the island, connecting the two ferry docks through the main town center. Outside the center, neighborhoods branch out along quiet wooded lanes, open pastures, and saltwater shorelines. Because Vashon is unincorporated, King County manages local planning, roads, and emergency services. Your location on the island shapes your everyday travel: settling on the north end makes trips to Seattle much faster, while living near the south end puts you minutes from Tacoma.

The island also carries a deep, layered history. It is the ancestral homeland of the sx̌ʷəbabš people, whose descendants are part of the Puyallup Tribe today. In the early twentieth century, Vashon became famous for its sprawling strawberry fields, largely cultivated by Japanese American families. The restored Mukai Farm and Garden preserves that agricultural chapter, highlighting the legacy of B.D. Mukai, his family's innovative fruit business, and their resilience through wartime displacement. That farming heritage continues today through working family farms, community gardens, and honor-system roadside stands selling fresh eggs and seasonal produce.
