Vassar, MI

Vassar is a Tuscola County city built around the Cass River, where M-15 crosses the water. The 2020 census counted 2,727 residents. Four founders came here on March 1, 1849, looking for a place to build a dam and start a city; the river supplied both the location and the early industrial logic. A mill, bridge, and railroad later made the Cass River corridor the city's center, and Vassar's nickname, Cork Pine City, keeps a bit of the local timber history in circulation. Today the river is still the city's clearest organizing feature.

Vassar's downtown, city services, schools, and Rock the River Cruise-In and concert gather near the Cass, while the Vassar Dam and water trail connect town routines to fishing and paddling. City flood-warning pages also underline the practical side of the river: the Cass and Moore Drain shape where high water can move through town. Vassar is a small Thumb city with a mill-and-dam origin that still shows up in the street grid, the waterfront events, and the way residents talk about the river.
