About Veedersburg

Veedersburg began as Chambersburg on the north fork of Coal Creek, then Peter S. Veeder and his partners laid out a new town in 1871. It incorporated as Veedersburgh in 1872, dropped the h in the 1890s, became a city in 1900, and returned to town status in 1936. Today the Fountain County town sits at the crossroads of I-74 and US 41, about ten miles from the Wabash River. Its public library occupies a separate place in the story, with a building and grounds created through George d'Arlier's gift. Veedersburg is Indiana name-history in plain sight: one creek, several spellings, and a town that kept adapting.
