About Venice

John Nolen's city plan remains legible in the historic heart of Venice, where a deliberately mixed-use center designed for travel on foot grew from Garden City planning ideas rather than from an accidental street pattern. Physician Fred Albee first commissioned Nolen, and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers continued the project. The resulting historic district reflects a plan platted between 1926 and 1929 and substantially completed by 1960. Venice Island, despite its local name, is part of the mainland enclosed by the Gulf of Mexico and the constructed Intracoastal Waterway, with bridges linking it to the rest of Sarasota County. The agency's 2020-2024 estimates indicate that 61.4 percent of residents were 65 or older, an unusually large share that makes accessible public spaces and recurring daytime activities especially relevant. More than 30 city parks range from pocket spaces to Gulf beaches.

The Venetian Waterway Park provides five miles of walking and bicycling routes on both sides of the Intracoastal, while the broader park system includes boat and kayak access and a dog beach at Brohard Paw Park. Near City Hall, the Venice Farmers Market was operating year-round on Saturday mornings in 2026, bringing produce, baked goods, seafood, plants, prepared food, and work by local makers into the historic center. Fossils form another recurring public theme. Venice MainStreet's Shark's Tooth Festival filled Centennial Park in 2026 with fossil and shark vendors, music, food, and children's activities; the organizer has scheduled the next festival for April 10-11, 2027. That event gives a civic setting to the fossilized shark teeth found along area beaches, while the waterway paths, market, and neighborhood parks make Nolen's emphasis on connected public space visible in ordinary weekly routines.
