Vermontville, MI

Vermontville is an Eaton County village within Vermontville Township, with 716 residents in the 2020 census. Maple Valley Schools serve the village and nearby farm country, while three public parks and the historic center fit inside a footprint of about a square mile. The place’s signature event is the original Michigan Maple Syrup Festival, held on the last full weekend in April. Local syrup producers started talking about the idea in a 1940 barber-shop conversation; the festival became a formal corporation the next year and now brings pancake breakfasts, parades, maple goods, and spring visitors to town.

Rev. Sylvester Cochrane organized Vermontville in 1836 with the Union Colony after coming from East Poultney, Vermont. Maple sugar was already part of the local economy, and residents carried syrup and sugar to Battle Creek. The Opera House has held meetings, library shelves, museum displays, and stage programs over the years, giving the village an indoor landmark with several past lives. Vermontville’s streets still connect the school, parks, maple woods, and older buildings, and every April the syrup festival makes that small map feel much larger.
