Vernonburg, GA

Vernonburg sits on a sharp bend of the tidal Vernon River about ten miles south of Savannah, a narrow riverfront town surrounded by the marshes and live-oak country of coastal Chatham County. Salzburgers and Palatine settlers reached the area in the 1730s and 1740s, and the community was incorporated in 1866. Its name honors James Vernon, an early supporter of the Georgia colony who helped bring Salzburgers to the region. River access shaped the settlement, while the nearby city made Vernonburg a summer retreat for Savannah residents in the nineteenth century.

Today Vernonburg is mostly a short run of riverfront properties, older homes, shaded streets, and small-town government inside the Savannah metro area. The Vernonburg Historic District includes archaeological remains from the eighteenth-century German settlement, later resettlement, and early twentieth-century development. The river bend still organizes the view: docks, marsh grass, tidal water, and roads that turn with the shoreline. Savannah is close enough for daily jobs and services, but Vernonburg keeps a distinct residential scale. It is a coastal community whose history is easiest to see in the curve of the river and the homes set above it.
