Verona sits about ten miles southwest of downtown Madison, offering a mix of small-town roots and rapid suburban growth. The biggest driver of Verona's modern economy is Epic Systems, the healthcare software company headquartered on the west side of the city. Spanning hundreds of acres, the campus is famous for its whimsical, themed office buildings and landscaped grounds that bring thousands of tech workers to town each day. Having such a major employer has helped fund top-tier municipal services and attracted great restaurants, coffee shops, and hotels to the area. On the flip side, it also creates noticeable rush-hour traffic along Verona Avenue and highway interchanges during shift changes. Even if you do not work in software, Epic's presence heavily influences local housing demand and neighborhood development.

Outdoor recreation is a major draw for people moving to Verona, particularly runners, cyclists, and active families. The Military Ridge State Trail runs directly through downtown and links up with the Ice Age Trail, giving you uninterrupted paths to bike east into Madison or west toward the scenic hills of southwestern Wisconsin. Right near the city border, Badger Prairie County Park adds hundreds of acres of recreation with mountain bike tracks, a large dog park, and open sports fields. While Madison Metro runs weekday bus service between Verona and the Capitol Square, most residents find having a car essential for running daily errands and getting around the region.

Verona earned the nickname "Hometown U.S.A." in the 1960s when American service members in Vietnam adopted it as their symbol of home. That sense of community remains strong today, particularly during the annual Hometown Days festival each June, which brings everyone together for parades, live music, and carnival rides. Families are also drawn to the area by the highly regarded Verona Area School District and its expansive high school campus.
