The City of the Village of Clarkston is a half-square-mile Oakland County city surrounded by Independence Township, about 34 miles northwest of downtown Detroit. The 2020 census counted 928 residents. The village grew around mills that sawed lumber and ground grain from surrounding farms, and the Mill Pond, part of the Clinton River, still sits at the center. Over 100 historic structures form the Clarkston Village Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1980. Main Street and the surrounding historic blocks carry the everyday center, with shops, eateries, and businesses tucked into the old mill-town street pattern.

Depot Park hosts concerts, and local events include parades, festivals, and an art fair. Clarkston Community Schools serves the city alongside Independence and Springfield townships, so school and village routines stretch beyond the city limits. Clarkston is a compact historic center set among lakes and township neighborhoods, with Detroit close enough to shape the regional connection without defining the local streets today.
