Vincent, AL

Vincent is a small Alabama city that sits across three counties—mostly Shelby, with pieces in St. Clair and Talladega—along the Coosa River boundary. U.S. 231 is the main route through town, and U.S. 280 is about a mile south, putting Vincent roughly 30 miles southeast of Birmingham. The place began as Propel, then took the Vincent name in honor of the family that settled here; the town received its charter in 1897. A Central of Georgia Railway line arrived in 1887, the same year the post office opened, giving the community a rail connection before the highway became its main reference point.

Vincent’s local landscape is a mix of rolling foothills, cotton fields, springs, and roads leading toward Pell City, Harpersville, and Birmingham. The school system is a major part of the town’s story: Vincent has an elementary and middle school, and in 1993 it became the first Alabama community to use a year-round school calendar. That detail still separates Vincent from the usual small-town snapshot. The city is close enough to the Birmingham metro to share its work and shopping patterns, but the county-line geography keeps the place rooted in its own river, farm, and school network. Vincent feels like a crossroads that kept its original name while the routes around it changed.
