Vinegar Bend is an unincorporated census-designated place in Washington County, Alabama, situated fifteen miles south-southwest of Chatom. With a population of 178 at the 2020 census, the community has a colorful origin story for its name: one account holds that a container of vinegar burst at the freight station near a bend in a local river, giving the settlement its distinctive name. The community's post office, which served ZIP code 36584, closed in 2010 when a bridge on the main road was closed for repairs.
