Vineland, MN

Vineland is an unincorporated community and census-designated place on the Mille Lacs Indian Reservation in northwestern Mille Lacs County. The 2020 census counted 869 residents. Its Ojibwe name, Neyaashiing, means "on the point of land," fitting its location on Indian Point along Mille Lacs Lake. Vineland serves as the administrative center for the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, so the community's civic map includes Band government, schools, cultural programs, and the lake shore.

The Band's Nay Ah Shing Schools connect preschool through high school with Ojibwe language and culture programs, while the Mille Lacs Indian Museum and Trading Post adds a public cultural stop in the lake country. The lakeshore is also part of daily community geography. A post office called Vineland opened in 1891 and operated until 1921; the English name was linked to the Viking colony of Vinland. Today, Onamia Public Schools and nearby Highway 169 connect Vineland outward, but Indian Point and Neyaashiing give the place its own center.
