Virginia City, MT

Tucked into Alder Gulch between the Tobacco Root and Gravelly mountain ranges, Virginia City offers a quiet, scenic setting in southwest Montana. The town has just over two hundred year-round residents and sits along Highway 287, about fifteen miles west of Ennis. Virginia City got its start as a booming gold camp in 1863 and briefly served as the capital of Montana Territory. Because it remains the Madison County seat, the town maintains an active courthouse and steady local government presence throughout the year.

Daily life here revolves around authentic Old West character, with 19th-century wooden boardwalks and historic storefronts preserved right along the main street. Summers are lively thanks to visiting tourists, seasonal shops, and live theater at the Virginia City Opera House, while the colder months bring a peaceful, slow-paced small-town atmosphere. Residents have access to local staples like the historic Thompson-Hickman Library, and most everyday errands, clinics, and grocery runs are handled with a quick drive down the road into Ennis.
