Walden, CO

Walden is Jackson County's seat, most populous community, and only incorporated municipality, set in the center of North Park. The 2020 census counted 606 residents, and the town sits at roughly 8,100 feet above sea level on a broad high-country valley floor. Mark A. Walden, an early postmaster, gave the community his name; the town was established in 1889 and incorporated the following year.

State Highways 14 and 125 connect Walden with the rest of northwestern Colorado, while ranch roads spread across North Park toward Cowdrey, Coalmont, Rand, and Gould. North Park School District R-1 serves the county from preschool through 12th grade, with Wildcats teams and many students coming from remote cattle ranches. The town's small civic core sits inside a valley used by ranchers, anglers, hunters, and wildlife watchers. Walden also calls itself the Moose Viewing Capital of Colorado, a title tied to the valley's wetlands, sage, forests, and reintroduced herds. County offices, school routines, ranching, and wildlife all meet in this high-elevation seat.
