Walker, IA

Walker is a Linn County city in eastern Iowa, with 688 residents in the 2020 census and a place in the Cedar Rapids metropolitan area. The town grew from the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway, and its original depot—built in 1873—now serves as a museum across from Walker City Park. The Rock Island Railroad later took over the line, and by 1900 four passenger trains passed through each day. Walker became a shipping point for the surrounding farm country, with the tracks shaping the town’s first commercial rhythm.

That railroad history still gives Walker a physical center. The depot museum, city park, Main Street businesses, and the North-Linn Community School District all sit within a short daily orbit. North-Linn’s elementary, middle, and high school campus is in nearby Troy Mills, while Walker keeps its own municipal address and small-town calendar. The former Sardinia one-room schoolhouse is also preserved at the depot grounds, adding a second layer of rural education history. Walker is a city built around a rail stop, with farm traffic, school routes, and a museum keeping the old corridor visible.
