Wallace, LA

Wallace sits on the west bank of the Mississippi River in St. John the Baptist Parish, a rural community reached from Interstate 10 by the Gramercy Bridge. The 2020 census counted 755 residents. Sugar-cane fields, levee roads, and the river set the physical frame, while New Orleans–Metairie–Kenner metro connections keep the community tied to the larger region.

Evergreen Plantation, a National Historic Landmark since 1992, is the best-known address near Wallace, but the history is wider than one house. The landscape includes the work of enslaved people, the surviving plantation complex, and the African American communities that grew along this stretch of river. Louisiana’s African American Heritage Trail puts that story into a statewide travel route. Today, school buses run through St. John the Baptist Parish schools, and parish services and roads organize everyday errands. The levee and bridge make the river’s presence impossible to miss. Wallace is a place where the riverbank, sugar country, and layered Black and Creole history all remain visible in the same drive.
