About Walland

Walland sits in Miller’s Cove in Blount County, where Little River meets a landscape framed by Chilhowee Mountain to the north and Hurricane and Bates mountains to the south and southeast. The place name covers an unincorporated community and a wider ZIP-code area, so the local map spreads beyond a single compact center. Walland Elementary School and the post office are the clearest institutions within the community, while roads lead toward the foothills and the Smokies.

Walland’s history reaches far back. The Juan Pardo expedition is believed to have crossed Little River here in 1567, and later Cherokee trails and settlement routes ran through the cove. Euro-American settlers arrived in the 1780s, drawn by fertile valley land and the routes through the mountains. Great Smoky Mountains National Park changed the region’s travel pattern in the twentieth century, but Walland remains grounded in the older geography: a river crossing, a broad cove, and mountain walls that make every road feel part of a larger Appalachian valley.
