About Wanatah

Wanatah is a LaPorte County town that took shape when railroads reached the marshy northwest Indiana landscape in the 1850s. The town was laid out on September 7, 1865, as the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne and Chicago Railroad approached completion, while another line ran through nearby Rozelle. The Wanatah Historical Society keeps that railroad-era map in view, along with the farmland that followed the drainage and settlement work. Wanatah is northern Indiana with a town plan drawn by tracks, turned into a farm community after the trains arrived.
