About Wanchese

Wanchese is a census-designated place on the southern end of Roanoke Island in Dare County, North Carolina. Named for the last known ruler of the Roanoke Native American tribe and developing into a major center of commercial fishing and boatbuilding on the Outer Banks, the community of approximately 1,956 is served by Dare County Schools.
