Wantagh, NY

Wantagh's preserved 1885 railroad station now stands on Wantagh Avenue, carrying the hamlet's agricultural and commuter eras in the same building. Residents formed the Wantagh Preservation Society in 1965 when construction of the present elevated rail line threatened the station with demolition. It was moved the next year, restored to its 1904 appearance, and opened as a museum in 1982. A 1912 Long Island Rail Road parlor car and a recreated early post office share the grounds. The surrounding community had remained largely agricultural into the early twentieth century before Sunrise Highway and development associated with Jones Beach accelerated suburban growth. Wantagh is a hamlet and census-designated place within the Town of Hempstead; its 2020 census population was 18,613. Transportation still organizes much of the local map. Wantagh station is on the Long Island Rail Road's Babylon Branch, while the Wantagh State Parkway runs south to Jones Beach.

The state park encompasses more than 2,400 acres and 6.5 miles of Atlantic shoreline, with ocean and bay swimming, a two-mile boardwalk, year-round cycling, fishing, a concert theater, and the Energy & Nature Center's exhibits and public programs. Closer to residential streets, Nassau County's Wantagh Park supplies a pool complex, marina, fishing pier, kayak launch, athletic fields, dog run, and one- and two-mile walking routes. Its two-mile fitness trail finishes near the marina, connecting exercise facilities to the bayfront. Wantagh Public Library provides another local gathering point through children's, teen, and adult programs, streaming and tutoring services, a circulating telescope, and museum passes for resident cardholders. The library also participates in community events such as the annual spring festival at the train station.
