Washburn, WI

Washburn is Bayfield County's seat on a hillside above Chequamegon Bay, with Highway 13 passing through the old lake-port grid. French explorers Radisson and Groseilliers passed along this shore in 1659, and Jesuit Claude-Jean Allouez established a mission nearby in 1665. The city took shape in 1883 as a port for rail traffic, timber, and locally quarried brownstone. The bay and the highway still provide the basic orientation, with the city laid out above the water and the waterfront carrying both working and recreational history.

Memorial Park occupies the site of the former McClellan sawmill settlement, with a campground and bluff views over Chequamegon Bay. A lakefront parkway and walking trail run along the shore from Thompson's West End Park toward the Athletic Field Complex, with signs describing former waterfront industries. In the 1890 Old Bank Building, the Washburn Cultural Center runs rotating art exhibitions, workshops, and special events alongside the Washburn Area Museum. The marina, cultural center, and county-seat offices give Washburn a present-day map that still makes sense from the water outward.
