Washington, KS

Washington is the Washington County seat, a north-central Kansas city on U.S. 36 established in spring 1860. The settlement was named the county seat that same year and was protected through the Civil War by two stockaded buildings, the Washington Company House and Woolbert's Stockade Hotel. The 2020 census counted 1,071 residents. The highway still gives the city its regional orientation, linking its courthouse-town role to the surrounding farm country.

Local life has a practical, community-built feel. Washington County USD 108 serves the area, having formed in 2006 through consolidation of two earlier districts. The city park includes Munchkinland, a playground built with community help, along with a walking fitness trail. The Washington County Historical Society keeps the area's older story in view, while the county-seat functions bring government, school, and everyday services together in one small downtown. Washington is the kind of place where its history is visible in civic buildings and local gathering spots instead of being kept apart from ordinary town life.
