You will hear Waterbury called the "Brass City" almost as soon as you arrive, and that industrial history is still easy to see across town. During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, local factories turned out everything from brass buttons and pocket watches to wartime supplies. While synthetic materials eventually replaced old-school brass in the mid-1900s, the city found practical ways to repurpose its industrial footprint. Today, former mill properties host major shopping areas like the Brass Mill Center, and classic brick architecture gives the community a distinct, down-to-earth New England character.

Waterbury’s geography takes a little getting used to because the landscape is steep and varied. The Naugatuck and Mad rivers cut through the valley floor alongside the main highways and rail lines, while residential neighborhoods climb up the surrounding hills. There are about 25 distinct neighborhoods, ranging from well-established spots like Bunker Hill and Town Plot to quieter pockets near the town borders. Getting around can feel confusing at first because of the hills, river bends, and the multi-level "Mixmaster" interchange where Interstate 84 meets Route 8. A destination that looks close on a map might take an extra ten minutes of navigating highway ramps and winding hillside streets.

Healthcare and higher education anchor the modern local economy. Waterbury Hospital and Saint Mary’s Hospital are two of the region's biggest employers, drawing medical professionals, nurses, and administrative staff from across central Connecticut. Post University and CT State Naugatuck Valley maintain sizable campuses, while UConn's branch brings hundreds of students and faculty directly into the city center each day. That daytime crowd keeps downtown delis, cafes, and local bakeries busy throughout the workweek.

For entertainment and weekend outings, downtown has plenty to offer close to the Green. The historic Palace Theater brings in touring Broadway productions, stand-up comedy, and concerts under its restored 1920s proscenium. Just across the square, the Mattatuck Museum features rotating art galleries and exhibits on regional valley history. If you need to travel for work or leisure, Metro-North's Waterbury Branch offers a scenic rail connection down the valley toward Bridgeport and New York, while local CTtransit buses connect the outer neighborhoods with the city center.
