Waterflow, NM

Waterflow is a San Juan County community on the north side of the San Juan River, immediately west of Fruitland and across the river from the Navajo Nation. Shiprock lies to the east, and the high-desert valley is marked by Shumway Arroyo, oil wells, and the hogback that rises above the surrounding ground. The area is traditional Navajo territory and had a trading-post history connected to Walter Stallings; local naming also points to the oil fields that sit near the community.

Waterflow's working landscape has been shaped by energy. The San Juan Mine sits north of the river, and the San Juan Generating Station was built beside it before closing in 2022; the Four Corners power plant remains part of the wider regional energy map. Water planning is another major layer: the Navajo-Gallup project uses an intake near Waterflow on the San Juan River. Central Consolidated Schools serves Waterflow and neighboring communities. This is a high-desert valley where the river, hogback, oil wells, mine, and power infrastructure sit close together, with tribal land and regional water questions on the same map.
