Waymart, PA

Waymart is a Wayne County borough whose name came from a coal scale, not a person. The Delaware and Hudson Gravity Railroad used the spot as Plane No. 7, where coal was stockpiled over winter, weighed after the thaw, and sent onward toward the canal at Honesdale. That weigh-market became Waymart. A gravity-rail depot built in 1875 is still standing on South Street—the only remaining D&H gravity depot in Wayne County—and now holds the Waymart Area Historical Society’s museum. The borough incorporated in 1851, long before the old rail line became a museum piece. Waymart’s local map still reads as Pocono coal country: slopes, rail grades, a depot, and the town name hiding its job description.
