Weatherly, PA

Weatherly is a Carbon County borough of 2,541 residents in the 2020 census, tucked into the Ridge-and-Valley Appalachians at about 1,100 feet between Spring, Round Head, and Broad mountains. It began as Black Creek in 1825, when Benjamin Romig bought timberland along the dark-water creek; the name changed to Weatherly in 1848 after clockmaker and railroad executive David Weatherly. The Beaver Meadow Railroad and later coal traffic gave the borough its first industrial backbone. The old working map is still easy to read. Railroad shops, a silk mill, foundry, iron and steel works, brickworks, and bobbin and bicycle factories once filled the borough’s industrial story; current institutions include Weatherly Foundry and Castings, the school district, and Weatherwood Nursing Home.

Eurana Park remains the community’s big shared landmark, with a swimming lake, pavilion, band shell, shelters, and playground. The elementary and middle schools share one building, with the high school across the street. The local scoop is a mountain borough where rail, coal, local manufacturing, a big park, and a compact school campus still sit close together.
