About Weissport East

Weissport East is an unincorporated Franklin Township community on the east side of the Lehigh River in Carbon County. The 2020 census counted 1,252 residents. The community sits across from Weissport, with Pohopoco Creek forming its southern edge and the river separating it from the valley roads and boroughs to the west. Daily geography here is about water and crossings: Weissport is next door, parts of Lehighton lie across the river, and the canal corridor runs through the same Carbon County landscape.

The older story reaches back to Fort Allen, built in 1756 on the river, and to the Lehigh Canal, which opened in 1829 and carried coal and other goods through the valley. Those layers are still visible in the relationship among houses, water, and the old canal route. Weissport East shares the river-and-canal history of its neighboring borough, though its unincorporated status gives the community a different civic shape. If you want to understand the place, start with the bridge and look both ways: the river, creek, borough, and canal all arrive in one small piece of the valley.
