Weldon, CA

Weldon sits at the southeast tip of Lake Isabella in the Kern River Valley, about nine miles east-southeast of Wofford Heights at 2,654 feet. The post office opened in 1871, and the name honors cattle rancher William B. Weldon. Weldon had 2,303 residents in 2020. The lake changed the local landscape after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built Isabella Dam across the Kern River’s forks in 1953, creating a big water-and-mountain recreation base for the region. The day-to-day story is more practical than resort gloss.

Fishing, boating, camping, and forest roads share space with small subdivisions, ranch country, and a regional water system that is still being built out. The Weldon Regional Water District formed after years of work to consolidate several community drinking-water systems and address aging infrastructure. That mix—lake access, high-desert weather, rural roads, and water-system work—gives Weldon its local character. It is a Kern River Valley community with the reservoir at the front door and the Sierra foothills behind it.
