Wellington, TX

Wellington is Collingsworth County's seat on the southern edge of the Texas Panhandle, with U.S. 83 running along the east side of town. The 2020 census counted 1,896 residents. The highway runs north to Shamrock and Interstate 40 and south to Childress, so county business and regional service trips follow a long north-south line. The courthouse gives the county-government side of town a fixed center, while Wellington ISD keeps the Skyrockets at the center of school life. Ranching and cotton farming have both shaped the county's working landscape, and the city still serves as the place where those rural operations meet public offices, schools, and everyday commerce.

Ernest T. O'Neil, John S. McConnell, and John W. Swearingen established Wellington around 1889-90, naming it for the Duke of Wellington. Collingsworth County chose Wellington as its seat after the county formed in 1890, and a brick courthouse followed in 1893. The early town had a post office, general stores, a school, and O'Neil's hotel; by 1900, cotton had begun to rival cattle as an economic force. Those layers remain legible in a county seat whose public institutions serve a wide agricultural area.
