About Wellsburg

Wellsburg is a city in Grundy County, Iowa, named for George Wells, whose land and family shaped the town's first map. Wells moved his wife to the future town in 1867, and the rail line later reached his land in Shiloh Township. The first plat map of Wellsburg dates to 1884, marking the point when a settlement on the prairie became a laid-out town with a clearer street pattern. A schoolhouse followed in 1887, giving the new community a local institution as the railroad and town lots took shape.

Schooling remains part of Wellsburg's present map through the AGWSR Community School District, which brings together Ackley, Geneva, Wellsburg, and Steamboat Rock. The Wellsburg facility houses middle-school grades 6-8, elementary grades K-2, and a daycare and preschool program. That combination of rail-era origins, George Wells' name, and a shared rural school system captures the place well. Wellsburg is a small Grundy County city with a founder's name, a recorded 1884 plat, a schoolhouse tradition reaching back to 1887, and a civic life shared with neighboring communities.
