About Wellsburg
Wellsburg is Brooke County’s seat on the Ohio River, one of West Virginia’s older river towns. The town was laid out in 1790, after the Cox brothers first claimed land here in 1772, and it was renamed for Alexander Wells in 1816. The Wellsburg Historic District preserves the older river-town core, while the Ohio River still supplies the long eastern edge of the map. Wellsburg is the northern panhandle in a compact read: county seat, old streets, and a river doing the boundary work.
