Wenona, IL

Wenona got its start in the mid-1850s when the Illinois Central Railroad laid tracks across the north-central Illinois prairie. The new rail stop quickly turned the settlement into a central trade and shipping hub for surrounding farm families. As the community grew, it merged with neighboring East Wenona, settling into a quiet, friendly rhythm centered around local churches, school events, and longtime neighbors.

A coal boom in the late 1800s brought a wave of miners to the area, giving the town a surge of growth that lasted through the First World War. While the mining days are long gone, they left behind Wenona's most famous landmark: a large coal hill known locally as Jumbo. Now covered in trees, the mound stands out over the flat farmland, giving the town a unique silhouette and a lasting connection to its working-class roots.
